There are some great scenes, but a lot of exposition in between; I just never felt completely drawn in. Cover of the edition, preceded by a literary study on Stendhal by Balzac.
Part of the problem was that I didn’t know if the constant bumbling around was meant to be comedic or not which might have lent a little bit of charm to Fabrizio’s manifold incompetencies. Richard Howard’s param and definitive rendition of Stendhal’s stirring tale has brought about the rediscovery of this classic by modern readers.
