Since you’re going to drive a motor you will want to use clamping diodes to avoid inductive spikes from the motor killing the output transistors in l293be chip. So presumably they serve some other protective purpose?

Them D has built-in protection diodes. The L is limited to mA, but in reality can only handle much small currents unless you have done some serious heat sinking to l293me the case temperature down. Personally I still use external diodes with the D.
