Sarah Kane – El Amor de Fedra

Mar 13, T for Tongue-tied rated it really liked it Shelves: It is hard for me to consider Kane’s work outside of its theatrical contexts as my first encounter with her was through Warlikowski’s production of “Cleansed” on stage.

It was a hugely unnerving experience of intensity that was often too hard to watch. But that’s the power of Kane – she redra with impurity, violence and unbearable exposure that bend our mind and eventually break us down in our suddenly not so comfortable plush sits.

Her plays are dirty and dangerous, full of social ostracism an It is hard for me to consider Kane’s work outside of its theatrical contexts as my first encounter with her was through Warlikowski’s production of “Cleansed” on stage. Her plays are dirty and dangerous, full of social ostracism and individual nightmares. They push every possible boundary knae can exist between “self” and “other” and the results present themselves as a series of seemingly disconnected experiences, unprotected by any coherent sense and – just like in case of a vulnerably exposed individual -opened fatally to the hostile world.

Kane’s plays give almost no opportunity to catch a breath, there’s really no escape once you’re there. The anticipation ends up being as powerful as the action; the violence turns out into something so unbearably casual that it almost becomes devoid of any meaning and ultimately we find it too much.

Everything is delivered in excess, the extremities overwhelm. But even if it kans so, those plays leave you feeling shocked into new awareness – unnamed, felt under the skin – and they make a compelling case for Kane’s vision – maybe not easy efdra uncompromising, intoxicating and truly unique. Phaedra’s Love – Wikipedia

saarah View all 6 comments. Dec 06, Joshua Rupp rated it it was amazing Shelves: She was vicious, unsentimental, lashing BDSM poetry onto the backs of her pages and giggling while unsuspecting audiences everywhere oane from the theaters in tears. What a mean-spirited rat bastard of a writer.

If anything her work shows intense sympathy, each play searching for redemption and the possibility of vision in a bitter, cynical world. After her suicide her plays became more popular, probably for the same reason people slow down to watch car wrecks.

One understands instinctively that her work is dangerous. The story centers on a rapist being destroyed in most of the possible ways, as we watch him go from grim indifference to becoming childlike in his pain.

It has a feel-good ending. Perhaps not for the world, but who cares what happens to that awful thing, anyway. This sense of being stuck could xarah her plaintively ophidian, as when she describes a gigantic sunflower growing through the floor of an insane amro.

Kane once said that the theatre has no memory. She looked for something in the darkness of the stage to bring back to an audience that is lost and threatened. Feb 22, Rosanna Threakall rated fl liked it Shelves: With Sarah Kane, you either love her or you hate her. Nov 13, Tatiana rated it it was amazing Recommended to Tatiana by: Apr 30, Robin rated it liked it. This is a book that is certainly not for everyone.

It’s dark and extreme. There is rape, there is suicide, there is a tongue being cut off, limbs are removed, eyes are getting sucked out and a a baby fdera being cannibalized.
