Smith does an amazing job tackling some of Husserl’s densest theories.

Our understanding of beings and their being comes ultimately through phenomenology. Husserl was after both, within a single discipline. It is a timeless, abstract, “ideal” entity, constituted as the entity it is in part by its relations to other such idealities — e.

This tree-as-perceived Husserl calls the noema or noematic sense of the experience. Smith’s explanation is that Husserl came to realize that his original semantic theory had invoked the wrong abstract entities.
These details can davif times be rather daunting, but to neglect them is to run the risk of distorting the ontological commitments of his various semantic projects.
How can you and I mean the same thing despite the manifold differences in our psychological states? Here arise issues of cognitive phenomenology.
Centuries later, phenomenology would find, with Brentano and Husserl, that mental acts are characterized by consciousness and intentionality, while natural science would find that physical systems are characterized by mass and force, ultimately by gravitational, electromagnetic, and quantum fields. Smith insists, however, that this centrality of Sjith theory of meaning should not be mistaken for the claim that it has the status of a foundational first philosophy in anything like smlth traditional sense — Husserl’s reputation to the contrary notwithstanding.
