I enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the uniqueness of slavery in America. Kolchin reveals that, while the plantation slavery of what was to become the South developed distinctively and primarily to cultivate tobacco and cottonit had much in common with the plantation slavery of the Caribbean where sugar was the primary crop. I hate bestowing any book with only a star, petr this one was very problematic.

I found the book somewhat redundant and hard to get through, but over all it is a great overview of American slavery as compared to Russian serfdom and Carribean slavery. It remains the best book to introduce a subject of profound and lasting importance, one that lies at the center of American history.

Very well written and a good introduction to the subject of American slavery. Preview — American Slavery by Peter Kolchin. This resulted in an intense relationship between slaves and slave owners and a rather distinctive slave society that was economically dependent on slavery, even though only a small number of whites directly benefited from the arrangement.
